The Golden State Warriors remain among the 10 teams pursuing LeBron James, as speculation about the four-time champion’s free agency continues to be a hot topic.
However, pulling off a deal for James would require navigating a complicated situation, and ESPN’s Shams Charania’s latest update suggests the Warriors have an uphill climb in pursuing the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar.
Shams Charania Drops Reality Check on Warriors’ Chances with LeBron James
James is intentionally pacing his free agency decision, giving Golden State a brief window to pitch a historic pairing of him, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Anthony Davis. He is also spending time with Green, as Charania broke on Tuesday.
However, Charania also shared that Golden State is not viewed as a frontrunner for James at this stage.
“The Warriors’ whole plan going into free agency was, ‘Okay, let’s see if we can get Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis,’” Charania said on Tuesday.
“I think the big draw for LeBron James with the Warriors would be, ‘Let’s see if there’s an avenue to get a package deal to the Warriors.’ And so short of that, like, I don’t think the Warriors are up on that list. I think the Warriors believe they’re not up on that list unless they’re able to package for Anthony Davis.”
Davis was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Washington Wizards during the 2025-26 season but has yet to appear in a game for Washington.
If Golden State were to make a serious push for Davis, Jimmy Butler would almost certainly be at the center of any trade package.
Butler is entering the final season of his contract and is set to earn $56.8 million next season, while Davis is scheduled to make $58.4 million.
Amid ongoing speculation that Davis is potentially going to Golden State, the Wizards have shown no indication that they are interested in moving him.
“It will be easier to answer that more definitively later this summer after Davis becomes eligible Aug. 6 for a contract extension that he clearly wants… ” NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer wrote.
“With no shortage of double-big lineups popping up around the league, sources say Washington envisions Ayton playing alongside both Davis and Alex Sarr at times.”
While the Warriors figure out how to navigate this situation, Charania highlighted that the top three destinations linked to James are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers.
